Dolphin Address 29 2003
August 29, 2003
The decline of each culture rotates in vortexes. Those of Fungi have charted Dingle as well as sucked it, by common intent, back into the cesspool of greed.
Dingle in the post-Fungi era, is characterized by dressed up monkeys with by winter woolen bonnets shaven ears, red hot shade blades and a nail through the chin, frivoloused by elderly girls, a touch out of focus, that odor themselves by a choice of nagging herbs. One meets them thrice each time one walks through town as they pace the 'Dingle Triangle' like zoo animals, seeking the redeeming answer to a meanwhile forgotten question.
Like midgets they hit on woman left for a sec and try to instantly bedazzle them with bewildering revelations of the superior blend of
coffee that sobered up their spiritual life.
And Dingle keeps trying to mask the crying-out-loud tourist traps with picturesque painted fisherman houses and touching shop windows from the 50's.
The lie is in the eye of the Bodhrun maker. She sees nothing in my wallet so she ignores me. With a blasé face she clasps a strip of plywood in a circle, that is going to be covered by a skin. Boomedeeboom, 140 euro and a foolproof bargain. Why work in your shop if you bum out your face? It's not that interesting or crafty.
Because the 'bloody tourist' needs to be persuaded that he is hanging pure Irish Culture in his Christmas tree. A child finds more music in a shoebox.
If the hangover would come before drinking the world would drown. Instead of warm welling of forgotten feelings a clammy haze hangs over my Irish youth. Only Fungi shines in tarty bronze. What happened in this romance between one dolphin and mankind?
It is not surprising that Fungi does not swim with us anymore. We were the last connection between land and sea and we have multiplied inadequately. We have not stopped the froth. Ever more the slogan of Sea Sheppard is prowling through my head: 'Sink them', 'Sink them', 'Sink them'!!!
Jan Ploeg, so glad to be back in my Fanore meadow, August 29th 2003
